Haula Traded to Hurricanes Days Before Saying “I Do”

This Saturday, Vegas Golden Knight Erik Haula is going to gain himself a beautiful bride with fiancee Kristen Boege. A lot of newlyweds get to enjoy right after. Unfortunately for the Haulas, they may be house-hunting in Raleigh.

That is the sad, unfortunate truth, folks. The Vegas Golden Knights have traded center Haula to the Carolina Hurricanes for prospect Nicholas Roy and a conditional 2021 fifth round pick. I don’t think that was on their wedding registry.

This is a blow considering he is a fan favorite. However, trading Haula does help alleviate some of the salary cap stress. He had one year remaining on his contract that was worth $2.75 million.

There is also the matter of the third line. Cody Eakin had filled in Haula’s role while he was out, but he had the bigger contract valued at $3.85 million with one year remaining. Several people wondered who would be moved and where to make room for Haula to fit into the VGK puzzle.

With Haula heading to become a Jerk, we should take a look at Nicholas Roy. This 22-year-old Canadian was drafted in 2015 in Round 4 by Carolina and has only played a total of seven games in the NHL.

He’s played plenty for the Charlotte Checkers, a minor league team, and scored a total of 28 goals and 74 points in the last two years. His contract goes through to the 2019-2020 year. His cap hit is significantly less than Haula’s, $720 thousand.

We knew trades were coming so Vegas could try to get under the $81.5 million salary cap. Though we’re expecting it, it doesn’t hurt any less.

We only hope that the wedding cake isn’t black and gold to turn what should be a magical day for the newlyweds into something bittersweet.
